Installing a custom skin in Caustic 3 is straightforward when using the .causticpack format.
Skins available from the Caustic 3 Archive are provided as .causticpack files, allowing them to be imported directly into Caustic without manually copying individual skin files.
You will need:
Caustic 3 installed on your Android device or on Widows PC
A Caustic 3 skin in .causticpack format
Access to the downloaded file on your Android device or Windows PC
The .causticpack format is designed to package Caustic content for import into the application's normal storage structure.
Download the .causticpack file from the Caustic 3 Archive Skins Page.
For example: MySkin.causticpack
Open the download folder on your Android device, and then use your device's file manager to select the skin.causticpack file you have just downloaded and move it to the caustic/skins folder.
Open Caustic 3 and go to the Settings Song page and click import.
This will open Caustics file browser. Click [parent]
While still in the file browser, click on skins.
Click on the skin you want to install.
Check that the skin is selected and click 'import'.
Click inside the box to select the skin
Download the .causticpack file to your Windows PC.
For example: Echo.causticpack. Navigate to /documents/skins folder and Click save.
Open Caustic and click the settings button.
Open Caustic 3 and go to the Settings Song page and click import. Then follow along with the Android instructions.
If the skin does not appear in the skin list:
Make sure Windows or another file manager has not added an extra extension.
The file should be: MySkin.causticpack
and not: MySkin.causticpack.zip This can happen when file extensions are hidden.
If the package is imported successfully but the skin does not immediately appear correctly, completely close and restart Caustic 3 before checking the skin again.
Make sure the .causticpack file was downloaded completely and has not been renamed or modified.
If possible, download the package again from the original archive page and retry the import.
.causticpack is the recommended installation method, but skins can also be installed manually by placing their files into Caustic's normal skin directory.
A manually installed skin follows this structure:
/caustic/
└── skins/
└── MySkin/
├── palette
└── skin graphics...
The exact location of the caustic and skin folder depends on the platform and installation.
For archive downloads, however, using the .causticpack version is recommended because it avoids having to manually locate and copy the individual skin files.
Custom skins were created for different versions of Caustic 3.
Some older skins may not display correctly in newer versions of Caustic because the Caustic interface and machine layouts changed between releases.
In particular, Caustic 3.2 introduced changes to the lower section of the PCMSynth machine interface associated with SawSynth controls. Older skins may therefore have visual elements that do not line up correctly when used with newer versions.
Where the archive has confirmed compatibility information, it will be included with the individual skin.
The .causticpack skins distributed by the Caustic 3 Archive are created from Caustic's normal skin directory structure and have been tested for import on:
Caustic 3 for Android
Caustic 3 for Windows
The archive's .causticpack files are therefore intended to provide the simplest installation method for archived skins.
If you are interested in creating your own .causticpack files, see the Caustic 3 .causticpack Creation Guide for the package structure and creation process. [Coming Soon]
