Caustic 3 has a strong visual identity inside the app, but it's standalone Windows installation sits inside a set of plain, generic folders. Nothing around it reflects the character or personality of Caustic itself.

Caustic Folder Icon Manager was built to bridge that gap.

Instead of modifying Caustic’s interface or touching the application files, the utility enhances the Windows side of the experience—giving the surrounding folders their own distinct look and feel.

The result is a more unified, expressive Caustic environment on your desktop, rather than a collection of ordinary Windows directories. It brings a bit of Caustic 3 creative energy into the places you navigate every day.

🖥️ How It Works

Folder Icon Manager organizes icon selection into three independent categories:

App — Customizes the main Caustic application and core document directories.
Presets — Customizes machine preset folders and their associated subfolders.
Skins — Customizes directories containing Caustic visual themes.

Each category can use a different icon profile, allowing you to create your own combination without having to modify the icon packs themselves.

Nothing is applied while you experiment with profiles. Change the App, Preset, and Skin selections and use the Before/After preview to see the proposed result before choosing Apply Icons.

Quick-Start Steps

Open Folder Icon Manager and select your Caustic 3 installation folder.
Select your preferred icon profiles for App, Presets, and Skins.
Use Preview Mode to inspect the proposed changes in the folder tree.
Run a Dry Run to check that the required folder names have matching icons.
Click Apply Icons to write the Windows folder-icon configuration.
Refresh Windows Explorer if necessary to see the changes immediately.

⚠️Reset to Default

Reset to Default removes the custom folder-icon settings managed by Folder Icon Manager and returns those folders to the normal Windows appearance. It is not a backup and restore system. If a different custom desktop.ini configuration existed before using Folder Icon Manager, the application does not preserve or reconstruct that previous configuration.

Note: The icon operation itself does not modify your Caustic application files, presets, songs, samples, or other music data.

🔧 Explorer Tools & Troubleshooting

Windows caches folder icons, which can sometimes prevent newly applied .ico files from appearing immediately. Folder Icon Manager includes several tools to help with this:

Refresh Explorer: Refreshes Windows Explorer to encourage the new folder icons to appear.
Restart Explorer: Restarts the Windows Explorer process when a normal refresh isn't enough.
Force Icon Cache Refresh: Performs a more thorough Windows icon-cache refresh. This closes open Explorer windows and temporarily restarts the desktop environment.

If an icon still doesn't appear after applying a profile, the Dry Run report can also help identify missing or incorrectly named .ico files.

📦 Building Custom Icon Packs

Folder Icon Manager uses a simple directory structure so that anyone can create and share their own icon profiles.

To create a custom profile, organize your .ico files inside these three subfolders:

File Naming & Inheritance

Filename Matching: Icons are matched to folder names case-insensitively, while the rest of the filename must match exactly. For example, app.ico is used for the app folder and documents.ico for the documents folder.
Preset Machine Icons: Machine folders such as pcmsynth, subsynth, and beatbox can have their own icon.
Machine Inheritance: Subfolders beneath a machine preset directory inherit the machine's icon, so an individual .ico file isn't required for every nested folder.
Missing Icons: If a matching icon cannot be found, the Dry Run report identifies the folder as [NO ICON] rather than silently applying something else.
