🎨 How Skins Are Organized

Preserving the files, history and context behind Caustic 3 skins

The Caustic 3 Archive does more than collect skin files.

Where possible, each skin is preserved together with information that helps identify what it is, who created it, where it came from, which version of Caustic it was made for, and how it relates to other surviving versions.

The original skin remains the primary archival object. Metadata and historical information are added around it to make the collection easier to understand, search and preserve.

Where the information can be established, a skin may be recorded with:

Not every skin will have complete information.

Some surviving files may have no known creator or original source. In those cases, the Archive records what can be established rather than filling gaps with assumptions.

👤 Creator & Attribution

Where possible, skins are connected to their original creator or author.

Historical forum posts and other surviving sources can be particularly useful here. A creator may have originally introduced a skin in a forum discussion, described a later version, or explained how it was made.

Where attribution can be supported by surviving historical material, that information is retained as part of the skin's record.

The Archive does not claim authorship simply because a filename or later repost associates a person with a skin.

🧬 Versions & Variants

Not every copy of a skin is necessarily the same skin file.

The Archive may encounter:

Original releases
Updated versions
Modified versions
Labelled variants
Compatibility versions
Repackaged copies
Renamed copies
User modifications

Where files differ, they are not automatically discarded as duplicates.

If a different version contains meaningful changes, the relationship between the files can be recorded instead.

This helps preserve the history of how a skin developed over time.

♻️ Duplicate Detection

The Archive uses file/content comparison to help identify exact duplicates.

If two copies contain identical data, they can be recognised as the same underlying file even when their filenames or download locations differ.

However:

Same name does not necessarily mean same file.

Two skins with the same name but different contents may represent different releases, modifications or variants.

Those differences are retained where they are meaningful to the historical record.

📜 Provenance

Whenever possible, the Archive records where a skin came from.

A surviving record might connect:

Skin → Creator → Original Discussion → Web Archive → Recovered File

This provides context that would otherwise be lost if the skin were simply copied into a modern download folder.

Internet Archive captures
Developer material
Community discussions
Surviving websites
Community mirrors
Personal collections

Historical sources can also help explain a skin when the original download or creator information is no longer available.

🕰️ Historical Context

The Archive treats historical information as part of the preservation record.

A forum post might identify a creator.

Another discussion might document a later version.

A third source might explain a compatibility problem.

Individually, these pieces may appear incomplete. Together, they can help reconstruct the history of a skin and its use within the Caustic community.

The Archive therefore preserves useful historical context alongside the files whenever it can be reliably connected to them.

⚙️ Compatibility

Caustic skins were not necessarily interchangeable across every version of the software.

Changes to the Caustic interface could affect how older skins appeared or functioned in later releases.

Where compatibility information is documented, the Archive records it with the relevant skin or variant.

This can include:

Caustic version
Known version differences
Graphical alignment issues
Machine-specific changes
Platform-specific observations
Installation requirements

Compatibility information is recorded as historical documentation rather than assuming that every skin behaves identically on every version or device.

💾 Preserving the Original

The Archive follows a simple principle:

Preserve the original. Add information around it.

The original skin files are retained wherever possible.

The Archive adds information such as:

Metadata → Classification → Provenance → Compatibility → Historical Context

These additions are intended to make the original material easier to find and understand without replacing or altering it.

🔎 Evidence Over Assumption

Some skins have excellent surviving documentation.

Others may survive only as an old file, a filename, a forum reference or a mention in another user's post.

The Archive therefore distinguishes between what can be directly established and what remains uncertain.

Where historical evidence is incomplete, uncertainty is documented rather than hidden.

This is especially important when identifying:

Recover

Locate surviving skin files from personal collections, historical websites, web archives and other legitimate sources.

Identify

Determine the skin's name, contents, creator, version and other available information.

Preserve

Keep the original files intact wherever possible.

Deduplicate

Identify exact duplicates while retaining meaningful variants.

Document

Record provenance, historical references, compatibility information and other useful context.

Index

Make the information searchable and connect related skins, creators, versions and sources.

🤝 Help Complete the Record

The surviving archive is unlikely to contain every Caustic skin ever created.

If you have an old skin stored on a computer, phone, tablet, backup drive or archived Caustic collection, it may contain information that is no longer available elsewhere.

Even if the file appears to be a duplicate, a renamed version or an old modification, it may help establish relationships between surviving copies.

Don't worry about sorting or identifying it first.

The Archive can examine the files and add the relevant information afterwards.
